The NSW Natural Resources Atlas (NRA) is a CANRI website designed for locating, viewing and querying natural resources data within New South Wales. Use the NRA to explore topics such as wildlife, vegetation, geology, land, water, pollution and more....

The NSW Natural Resources Atlas supports Microsoft Internet Explorer and Netscape Navigator versions 4 and above.

How to use the NSW Natural Resources Atlas (NRA):

1 Zoom in to your area of interest Choose a map width from the scrolling list, then click the map at the centre of your area of interest. How?
2 Add data to your map Click "Search for Data" below the map, to find what's available for your area of interest.
Choose data to add to your map from the search results list.
Edit the map legend before generating your new map. How?
3 Query the map Make a specific data layer active by clicking on its symbol in the legend below the map.
Press "Feature Info", then press "Refresh" if necessary (the "Refresh" button will flash).
Now you can click a map feature in your active data layer, to see details of that feature. How?

Instructions for use

Open the NRA from the link above and refer to these notes to help you use the website.

1.  Select Area of Interest

Decide how big an area (width) you want to view, select that width from the "at width" scrolling list at the top left corner, then click on the map at the location you want to zoom into.

If necessary you can re-centre the map by clicking on the new map centre. You can pan by clicking on the arrows around the map. For more information about navigating your way around the NRA please click here.

2.  Search for and select data layers

You are now ready to add data to your map by clicking on the   button below the map display and above the legend.

This will open a new window allowing you to tailor your data search and choose keywords to specify the type of information you wish to search for. 

Alternatively you can leave these fields blank to see all available records.

To initiate the search, press the "Search" button at the bottom of the "Search for Data" window. 

The search results are presented in a new window. Select a data layer of interest from the search results list by checking the   checkbox beside the data layer name. When finished selecting data layers, press the button at the bottom of the window.

The "Edit Legend" window will appear, displaying the data layers you have selected. You can choose to show each data layer on the map, or hide it but keep it on the legend for later display. You can also delete a data layer from the legend or change the order in which the data are drawn. After editing the legend, press "OK" to draw your new map.

The "Edit Legend" window can be accessed at any time from the main map window by clicking the button above the legend.

3.  View and query data layers

Once the requested data has been loaded, you can get more information for some data layers.

  • Make the data layer you want to query active by clicking on its symbol in the legend. (Not all data layers can be activated.)

  • Click at the top of the screen.

  • If the 'Refresh' button flashes red like this - , click this button. This prepares your browser to provide information for the active data layer.

  • Click on a feature (a point or a polygon) on the map to see information about the feature.
